Who doesn't love taking a 3D model and creating an actual, real world object out of it? In this class we'll cover how to slice an existing 3D model to get it ready to be printed out, as well as common tips and tricks, material considerations, and basic machine setup and troubleshooting - all to help you take a 3D file and convert it into a tangible physical object. *This is a two session class. Part One covers Materials & Software, followed by Machine Setup, Use, and Troubleshooting in Part Two. If we ever have a class full of experienced users we may shorten that class to one session covering everything, but for the most part expect it to be two sessions.* **It's encouraged to browse a few 3D file repository sites such as thingiverse, yeggi, printables, etc. before coming in to find a file you might be interested in printing. Printing complexity can vary from file to file, so it's good to have a few files in mind in case one doesn't work out.**
Design Lab is a hands-on, open-format class designed to help makers turn ideas, sketches, and digital assets into files that successfully produce real-world objects. Instead of focusing on specific software, this class teaches foundational file-prep concepts—scale, units, raster vs vector, layers, and non-destructive workflows—that translate across many tools and machines. Participants can bring any project they’re working on (3D printing, laser, CNC, Wazer, or general fabrication). Each session begins with a short lesson, followed by guided work time where files are prepared, tested on machines, adjusted, and improved. This is a practical, confidence-building class focused on helping you understand how to do what you want to make. This is not a class that teaches how to use the machines, you must take those workshops on your own. Basic computer skills are required. All skill levels welcome.
This project specific class is designed to teach students wire soldering techniques while making a beautiful pair of concentric earrings. You may make these earrings out of silver, brass or bronze with a sterling silver ear wire.
If you decide to work with silver, the class fee for silver is $40-$50 depending on the current market price and the number of rings you want to make. The cost for making the earrings out of copper, brass or bronze is $8. Class fee is payable to the instructor via cash, check or Venmo.
Minimum of 2 students. Maximum 4 students.
Join us for this jewelry open studio session. Bring new ideas or half finished projects to class. We'll work on the best way to approach design and technical aspects to complete your vision. Don't worry if you don't have a project, we'll come up with a jewelry design that you will love to make! This is a great way to network with fellow makers.
Intro to Jewelry Prerequisite Required
An introduction to the woodshop. We'll go over safety, goggles, hearing protection, etc. and be shown the dust collection system, access to manuals, and cleanup protocol. You will use most of the tools to demonstrate function. Tools include miter saw, jointer, planer, table saw, router table, and drum sander.
Everyone is welcome to come visit MakerLab, take a tour, and ask questions. No registration necessary. Come learn about our community, the equipment we have, and the classes we offer. Members are available to answer your questions and share their expertise as makers.
We offer the new member orientation class at 6:00. So, if you decide to join, you can get started right away. If you are already planning on joining, you can just come at that time. No registration necessary. If you have any questions, email us at info@themakerlab.org
The Maker Lab all things textiles hang-out is here!
This is a drop in, chill, sew, knit, crochet, just be, whatever event for everyone. You can bring your own project or play with materials at the lab.
Registration might help me plan, but is not necessary.
Please note that this is not intended to be an introduction class to any of the machines - but it is a great opportunity to revisit a machine and learn new tips and tricks!
You will be sent some introductory information to review (it's quick, I promise) before class that will help make the class easier to understand and remember!
Come learn the Basics and Fundamentals of Fusion 360. This program can be used to design in 2D (laser cutting, vinyl cutting, Wazer) or 3D for the 3D printers. This class will introduce you to Fusion 360's drafting capabilities. You'll learn the core workflow of sketch to model that's used in any project, whether you intend to 3D print, weld or machine it.
Before class, please install Fusion 360 on your computer and bring it to class (we will have a couple available if needed). It can be downloaded from https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-register-for-Fusion-360-for-Personal-Use.html
This class will be rescheduled if there are less than 2 people signed up
This skills class is a required course that all metal shop participants must take prior to working in the metal shop. This course will cover the safety equipment of the metal shop, tool safety and maintenance, and basic operation of equipment. While you will not leave this class a master fabricator, you will have the basic foundations to begin realizing all the possibilities of the metal shop.
This course will include lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Students will learn to operate the horizontal bandsaw, horizontal/vertical sander, drill press, angle grinder, and MIG welder. Additionally, we will discuss the difference between the fixturing table and the welding table.
Please wear closed toed leather shoes and cotton clothing that provides full upper and lower body coverage. No synthetic fabrics (polypropylene, rayon, spandex, etc) are allowed in the metal shop at any time. Clothing should not have free draw chords or frayed edges. If you have longer hair, bring something to pull your hair back for safety.
Personal protective equipment - if you have personal leather gloves, safety glasses, or hearing protection bring your own. The MakerLab also has these community items for you to use. If you have your own welding hood please bring this so we can ensure that it is set correctly. Good close vision is important for effective welding and cutting. Please bring the appropriate impact resistant glasses or other vision devices as necessary.
Tyvek, as in the house wrap, is a cheap, strong, light and waterproof material. It can be used to make outdoor gear, and is gaining popularity as an ultralight material.
We will make roll top stuff sack/dry bags using basic sewing machines. The class goal is for you to leave with a completed bag, and the knowledge to make simple custom bags to fit your own gear. We'll discuss basics of using Tyvek, and other materials that can be used in a similar way.
Intro to Textiles is a prerequisite - contact @Leah Roy-Ehri for any questions.
Make your own fun personalized T-Shirt or other fabric item (maybe a shop apron)! We will extend your knowledge of the vinyl cutter and learn to use the heat press. Come with a project idea (DM Kim on Slack if you have questions) I have the basic colors of vinyl, if you want something specific, let me know and we'll see what we can do. Bring your own T-Shirt (or other fabric item). We do have some T-Shirts available for a donation, let me know your size and I'll let you know what we have.
The MakerLab is accessible 24/7 for members.
