This skills class is a required course that all metal shop participants must take prior to working in the metal shop. This course will cover the safety equipment of the metal shop, tool safety and maintenance, and basic operation of equipment. While you will not leave this class a master fabricator, you will have the basic foundations to begin realizing all the possibilities of the metal shop.
This course will include lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Students will learn to operate the horizontal bandsaw, horizontal/vertical sander, drill press, angle grinder, and MIG welder. Additionally, we will discuss the difference between the fixturing table and the welding table.
Please wear closed toed leather shoes and cotton clothing that provides full upper and lower body coverage. No synthetic fabrics (polypropylene, rayon, spandex, etc) are allowed in the metal shop at any time. Clothing should not have free draw chords or frayed edges. If you have longer hair, bring something to pull your hair back for safety.
Personal protective equipment - if you have personal leather gloves, safety glasses, or hearing protection bring your own. The MakerLab also has these community items for you to use. If you have your own welding hood please bring this so we can ensure that it is set correctly. Good close vision is important for effective welding and cutting. Please bring the appropriate impact resistant glasses or other vision devices as necessary.
Who doesn't love taking a 3D model and creating an actual, real world object out of it? In this class we'll cover how to slice an existing 3D model to get it ready to be printed out, as well as common tips and tricks, material considerations, and basic machine setup and troubleshooting - all to help you take a 3D file and convert it into a tangible physical object. *This is a two session class. Part One covers Materials & Software, followed by Machine Setup, Use, and Troubleshooting in Part Two. If we ever have a class full of experienced users we may shorten that class to one session covering everything, but for the most part expect it to be two sessions.* **It's encouraged to browse a few 3D file repository sites such as thingiverse, yeggi, printables, etc. before coming in to find a file you might be interested in printing. Printing complexity can vary from file to file, so it's good to have a few files in mind in case one doesn't work out.**
Learn how to use the embroidery machine! We'll practice uploading files to the machine, and managing the machine to complete an embroidered felt ornament. Like the pickles if you were around for last year's holiday fest!
With help from this years Lodger Tax Grant I will be giving a glass hot casting class to the public. 50 participants in all will be split into 4 workshops.
The first workshop will be held on Nov 7th during First Friday Events and open to outsiders to watch the process while 25 participants work with artist Lucy Olechowski directly to create a glass tile for a larger sculpture that will be donated to Durango City.
WHAT TO BRING...
AN OBJECT TO IMPRINT IN A BED OF SAND THAT WE WILL THEN POUR HOT GLASS INTO.
Here is a short video of what to expect but we will be working smaller scale at 3-4"/pc

An introduction to the woodshop. We'll go over safety, goggles, hearing protection, etc. and be shown the dust collection system, access to manuals, and cleanup protocol. You will use some of the tools to demonstrate function. Tools include miter saw, jointer, planer, table saw, table router, and drum sander. You will be introduced to the cnc router and learn how to sign up for future classes. Bring your ideas or sketches of your next project and we will look at the tools you will need.
Bring your projects and ideas to this working studio session. Stay for the entire time or stop in anytime during the session. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with other jewelry makers and to get individualized instruction for your holiday fair projects.
Tyvek, as in the house wrap, is a cheap, strong, light and waterproof material. It can be used to make outdoor gear, and is gaining popularity as an ultralight material.
We will make roll top stuff sack/dry bags using basic sewing machines. The class goal is for you to leave with a completed bag, and the knowledge to make simple custom bags to fit your own gear. We'll discuss basics of using Tyvek, and other materials that can be used in a similar way.
Intro to Textiles is a prerequisite - contact @Leah Roy-Ehri for any questions.
Discover the fundamentals of glass sculpting in this hands-on introductory class. Designed for beginners, Glass One will teach students how to work with glass in its solid state, use essential tools, and develop a foundational understanding of this captivating medium. Under the guidance of a professional instructor, each student will create two unique glass pieces: a sculpted flower and a paperweight. This small class size ensures personalized instruction and a safe, engaging learning environment. If there is time available we will go into learning how to blow glass, which dives into the level two glass class, Glass Two: Blowing glass.
Students are required to take glass one before glass level two.
Come help clean and organize the Textiles Lab!
This is a great opportunity to see all of the fabrics and such that are available to members to use freely. And to help make your Lab the best it can be!
The Maker Lab all things textiles hang-out is here!
This is a drop in, chill, sew, knit, crochet, just be, whatever event for everyone. You can bring your own project or play with materials at the lab.
Registration might help me plan, but is not necessary.
Join us for an intro to our awesome textiles lab tools!
We'll start with an overview of lab safety and etiquette and an overview of equipment and supplies.
We will spend most of the class reviewing how to use the Singers, our straightforward sewing machines. Depending on skill level and class needs we may also delve into the embroidery machine, or other machines.
No cost and no need to bring anything.
This class will cover basic use of both the serger and the Jack industrial sewing machine. We won't spend much time practicing sewing, but this will be enough to get started.
Join local artist and MakerLab guest instructor Alex Bond for a four-part blacksmithing class. Alex will instruct students in the fundamental topics of lighting the forge, understanding metalurgy, and exploring techniques of manipulating molten metal into functional and/or artistic creations. The classes are scheduled on four consecutive Saturdays. If students are confident, they are encouraged to independently practice the skills they learn in between the Saturday classes.
Students should wear some form of natural fiber clothing such as wool or heavy cotton with full length upper and lower body coverage and closed-toed leather shoes. Clothing should not be excessively baggy. If you have your own personal protective equipment, please bring this to the class. This may include hearing protection, safety glasses, grind shield, welding hood, and leather gloves. If you have longer hair, please bring something to pull it back for safety.
Students must have completed the Intro to Metal Shop class prior to attending this class. The class does require full enrollment, four students, for it to be held.
Check out some of Alex’s amazing artwork at https://alexbondartwork.com/
Come learn some cool textile skills and help make ornaments for the Holiday Festival!
We will use felt to make different kinds of ornaments. We'll use sewing machines, hand sewing, beading techniques, and laser cutting. Different techniques will be demoed and you can choose your own adventure.
The goal is for you to be able to take home an ornament, and also to produce ornaments for the Festival.
Course prerequisites include completion of the Intro to Metal Shop class. It is also required that students have experience running either the CNC laser, CNC router (Laguna), or water jet (Wazer). This course will not cover the design and generation of the required vector files and students should have knowledge of vector design concepts.
Learn the design considerations, set up, and safe operation of the Premier Plasma CNC table. The Premier Plasma is a computer-controlled water table capable of accurate cuts on mild steel up to 1/2 inch in thickness. Software instruction will include the use of SheetCam for conversion of vector files to the required G-Code and Mach3 for set up of the table and running the G-Code.
Clothing should be made from natural fibers (thick cotton or wool) and shoes should be close-toed leather. If you have personal PPE - shade 8 safety glasses or welding hood that adjusts to shade 8, hearing protection, respiratory protection - please bring your own equipment.
We will be repurposing used banners and other materials to sew reusable grocery-type bags using the Jack industrial sewing machine. This is a great way to get comfortable with the Jack. We'll go over how to thread and operate the Jack and tips for sewing heavier materials.
Appropriate for members who have taken Intro to Textiles and have some basic sewing experience. Please send Leah Roy-Ehri a message on Slack with any questions.
Hopefully this is well attended enough to plan into 2026!
