FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can MakerLab Make Something For Me?

MakerLab is primarily focused on teaching people how to make things for themselves, and is not set up as a production facility. Sometimes we can pass a request off to our members and see if anyone wants to help, but it's not a guarantee.

Do You Offer Summer Camps/Children's Programming?

MakerLab is set up mostly for use by adults. Some of our tools and equipment carry a level of danger that isn't always appropriate for use by minors. We do encourage people to join with their children and take classes with them, but it is your responsibility as the parent/legal guardian to make sure you are providing direct supervision to anyone related to you under the age of 18 the entire time they are on premises. We do not offer field trips, camps, or classes specifically for minors, as it poses a significant risk to our safety and liability.

I Don't See a Specific Class on the Calendar...

Most of our classes are put on by various Stewards in the different areas. Some people prefer to run repeat classes on a schedule, while others prefer to wait for demand before scheduling a class. Once you join as a MakerLab member, you will have access to our Slack channel for internal communications, and you can use this to request a class if you don't see it offered.

I'd Like to Pause/Change/Cancel My Membership

Anyone can do these at any time in their membership portal. If you're logged into the website, you can click on the person icon in the upper right of the screen, and click on "View Profile". The main page has a sub section labeled "Credit Card", and there should be a link next to this to "Stop recurring payments". Doing this will make it so you won't be charged for the next month, and your membership will then lapse after a grace period of 15 days if no action is taken. If you are pausing your membership, you can then sign back up once you're ready to rejoin (please also let us know on Slack or email when you do rejoin, so we can reactivate your RFID card ASAP). Some banks require recurring payments to be stopped first before you can change your membership level, so be aware of that if you're trying to switch levels.

I'd Like to Donate Something...

At a community space like ours, space is at a premium, so we do have to vet any donations of materials or equipment beforehand to make sure they add to the MakerLab experience. We DO NOT want you dropping off unapproved items at our building. If you'd like to make a monetary donation, the link on our website primarily supports scholarship efforts, as well as space and equipment repairs and upgrades. If you would like to make a specific donation, whether it's monetary or something else, please contact us to be sure we're earmarking things correctly and/or it's an acceptable item. We are a registered non-profit, so we're happy to get you a donation receipt upon request.

I'm Interested in Starting An Etsy Shop, Business, or Financial Endeavor

MakerLab is intended as a prototyping and project based facility. While we certainly encourage people to learn skills which are transferable into profitable avenues, we are not a production facility. If you want to carry out a full product run, we expect that to be done outside of MakerLab and on equipment that you either own, or that is meant for full production run capability.

Do You Offer One-On-One/Private Training, or Training on Equipment Outside of What is at MakerLab?

The short answer is no, we offer classes on our specific equipment and machines. The long answer is that we are a community first and foremost, and if you're a contributing member of that community, it's likely that people will want to help you out with more specific things which aren't directly covered in our mission statement or organization goals.

Would MakerLab like to Collaborate?

It depends. We are a non-profit with limited and sometimes variable capacity, and we have to be smart about where we put that capacity. That said, if you think you have an idea that would be a good fit and benefit our membership in some way, shape, or form, please ask us.

How Can I Get More Involved?

We are largely volunteer run, and we are always looking for people who want to help keep MakerLab the vibrant and creative community we have always envisioned it being. Helping support and sustain your local Maker community can range from simple tasks like weekly cleanup of a particular space, helping with public events, showing up and getting to know your fellow makers; all the way up to becoming a Steward, teaching a particular skill or knowledge set, joining a committee, or joining our Board of Directors. We are developing a comprehensive task list of helpful things in that range, until it gets posted please don't hesitate to contact us if you are interested in contributing!

How Can I Be Sure the Machine I Want to Use Will Be Available?

Make sure to check and use our reservation calendar! It's linked in the upper right of every website page, and helps prevent overlap of machine use. People booked on the reservation calendar will be given preference over those not booked, and it's recommended in certain labs to also make a note on your reservation about what particular machines you plan on using.
